Hindsight is Always 20/20: Missing the Oral Cancer Diagnosis

Through a guided visual journey of inspiring oral cancer stories of survivors and those who have lost their lives, learn the subtle life-saving symptoms and critical screening techniques that will increase our opportunity to save a life!

Lecture Synopsis:

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but foresight is better, especially when it comes to saving a life.” William Blake

The ability to save a life through earlier diagnosis is a gratification that may not be compared to anything we do in dentistry. Conversely, when we ‘miss’ a diagnosis, the sorrow that ensues is challenging to overcome. Both the medical and dental communities have been caught off guard with a changing and escalating profile coupled with a number of social trends that are placing our dental patient at heightened risk for oral and oropharyngeal cancer. Through a guided visual journey of inspiring and moving oral cancer stories of survivors and those who have lost their lives, learn the subtle life-saving symptoms and critical screening techniques that will increase our opportunity to save a life! This is a presentation you will never forget.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To recognize the incidence and five-year survival rates of current oral and oropharyngeal cancer
  • To explore the critical components and palpation techniques of today’s oral cancer screening exam
  • To understand the role adjunctive screening devices play in enhancing our assessment capabilities
  • To understand our role in the earlier discovery of oral/oropharyngeal cancer

“I took your sessions last year and I found you to be very informative and such a great speaker - you can really feel the heart you put in. However, this years sessions were very profound. You had me break down several times in your Oral Cancer lecture (Hindsight is 20/20: Missing the Oral/Oropharyngeal Cancer Diagnosis) and the interview with Dr. Manu Dua’s sister was so heart wrenching. It really is going to stick with me. Thank you so much for bringing this story to my attention, and giving his sister a platform to share.”
Alia Vaughan, RDH, Pacfic Dental Conference 2022 Attendee

“I cannot tell you how thankful I am for your wonderful, informative, and heartfelt presentation. Our colleagues truly enjoyed it. We will definitely have you back for other topics.”
Kandyce M. A’see, RDH, MS. Associate Professor, Department of Undergraduate Professions, Dental Hygiene Program, University of Augusta - 2021
